For over 15 years, the Elwood community has fought for a pedestrian-operated crossing on Glen Huntly Road near Elster Creek and Elwood Primary School.

Despite repeated promises from politicians, nothing has changed.

Every day, children, families, and residents are forced to dodge trucks and speeding cars just to cross this dangerous road. How much longer must we wait?

Why this crossing matters

Keep Kids Safe: Elwood Primary and Elwood College students cross this road daily, often without a crossing supervisor. No child should risk their life just to get to school.

A Known Danger Zone: In just five years, from 2010-2015, fourteen crashes were recorded in the area, nine of which resulted in injuries. Residents continue to report countless near misses, and local representatives have raised the issue in Parliament for over a decade.

Support Sustainable & Active Transport: A safe crossing would connect the Elster Creek walking and cycling trail, making it safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and local commuters while reducing congestion and emissions.

Unkept Promises - Time to Deliver
 - In 2010, VicRoads confirmed that a pedestrian crossing was needed in the area. But nothing progressed.
 - In 2018, the City of Port Phillip unanimously backed the project and contributed $50,000 in funding. Still no action.
 - In 2019, local MPs publicly acknowledged the urgent need for a crossing. Still no action.
 - In 2022, a community update stated the crossing would be installed by the end of the year. Still no action.

This is not just an inconvenience– it’s a serious safety risk.

We demand the Victorian Government fully fund and immediately install a pedestrian-operated crossing on Glen Huntly Road.
