Standing up for a better world is not a crime.
After decades of attacks by governments at all levels, the right to protest is under serious threat. This cannot be allowed to continue.
Whether it’s young people standing up for a safe climate, workers taking action for fair wages and conditions, or non-violent protests calling for a ceasefire in Palestine, this right needs to be defended.
Those in power may find protest inconvenient or uncomfortable, but we know protests and demonstrations are a key tactic for the community to pressure governments into taking much needed action.
Let’s be clear: protest is not the problem.
The Federal Government is party to a number of international treaties that give obligations to protect the right to protest. It’s time for them to implement these.
Yet right now, state and territory governments are chipping away at the rights of the community to free political expression and action.
That’s why the Greens are calling on the Labor Government to:
- Support the repeal of all anti-protest laws introduced in the last 20 years
- Enshrine the right to protest in law as a fundamental right
- Make sure non-violent protesters cannot be sent to prison for expressing their views
