Climate change and native forest logging are destroying our nature, wildlife and precious places.
But did you know that our current environment laws don’t force the Environment Minister to consider fossil fuel pollution and climate damage when deciding on development approvals?
Not only that, but the laws also don’t protect Australia’s ancient old growth forests from logging and destruction.
Australia’s environment laws as they stand are out of date and not fit for purpose in the current climate and extinction crises.
This year, we have an opportunity to fix our broken environment laws, but the Environment Minister has just announced further delays to this package of laws to save the environment from the effects of climate change.
While the new laws continue to be delayed, we can’t stop pollution from dirty fossil fuel projects or protect our native forests from destruction. The laws as they stand aren’t worth the paper they're printed on.
This has been a big test for the Labor Government, and the environment and our wildlife are the ones losing. Will Labor hurry up and introduce laws that end native forest logging and stop the pollution that is making the climate crisis worse?
The Greens are calling on the Albanese Government to reform our environment laws urgently, and ensure that they:
- Assess all new projects for their climate impact before being given environmental approval
- Commit to no new coal, gas projects to be approved
- End native forest logging and habitat destruction
