The Issue

On 3 September 2025, the St Kilda PCYC CEO announced that it would end all unfunded programs on 3 October and that the Board had decided to sell the building at 179 Inkerman Street, the organisation’s home since 1975. These decisions were made with less than a month’s notice and without transparency to its members or the local community.

PCYC is more than a gym. Since 1947, it has been a vital community hub, supporting young people with recreational, sporting, cultural and learning activities. The gym, basketball courts and boxing hall are open to the whole community, running programs for people of all ages, from children to older people.

For more information, you can visit Save St Kilda PCYC.

Who Is Impacted?

In an area where up to 60% of residents live in apartments and lack outdoor space, PCYC provides more than exercise. It offers connection, health, belonging, and opportunity.

  • Young people, especially those who are vulnerable or at risk, will be hardest hit by the loss of 179 Inkerman Street and the programs delivered there.
  • Primary school children and PCYC members of all ages will be left with limited access to affordable, inclusive facilities.
  • Young people who turn to PCYC today for support, sport and connection are the same people who will, in the future, rely on it for health and wellbeing.

What Can Be Done?

We are calling on the Board to:

  1. Pause the sale of the St Kilda PCYC site.
  2. Provide financial reports and full transparency about the financial situation.
  3. Consult genuinely with members, families and the local community before making irreversible decisions.

As members of the St Kilda community and beyond, we will not stand by while a vital community centre is lost.
