The Albanese Government must do all it can to be a force for peace and disentangle us from the United States.
Reports that the US – under the order of President Donald Trump – have bombed Iran demonstrate that they are a fundamental threat to peace.
Australia must not follow the US into another war. Australia must be a force for peace.
We call on the Albanese Government to:
- Clearly condemn US escalation and refuse to join any US war against Iran.
- Introduce an immediate two-way arms embargo on Israel
- Sanction Israeli officials responsible for genocide in Gaza
- Prohibit the use of US military bases, including Pine Gap, in Australia from being used in this conflict
- End the AUKUS agreement that enmeshes us with the US military
- Recall all Australian personnel on secondment or training with the US military
- Forbid the US military from using Australian airspace in this conflict, including for refuelling.
The Albanese Government has ignored, attacked and belittled those calling for peace. This has only empowered bullies like Trump and Netanyahu.
The cost of war is always inflicted on ordinary people.
The Iranian people, who currently face oppression under the Iranian regime, are only put at further risk of violence and persecution by these US and Israeli attacks.
Only when countries like Australia hold to principles of international law – and back them up with material actions – will there be a chance for peace.
