Greens Deputy Leader and International Aid & Global Justice spokesperson Senator Mehreen Faruqi has said that Australia’s failure to contribute to global climate finance has again been exposed in a new report released during COP27.
According to the Carbon Brief report, Australia has provided substantially less than its fair share of global climate finance.
Senator Faruqi said:
“Australia has failed on climate finance, and we can no longer ignore our clear responsibility to contribute.
“We need to commit to paying our fair share of climate finance, and also be a staunch ally to the Global South in negotiations at COP27 and beyond.
“Rejoining the Green Climate Fund is essential here.
“Recognising we need to ‘listen’ to our Pacific neighbours is one thing. But actually doing what they are asking of us is quite another.
“Australia and other wealthy countries of the Global North have sacrificed the lives and livelihoods of those in poorer nations in our climate recklessness. The time to take responsibility and step up is now.”
