It beggars belief that the Queensland and federal governments want to give Adani, a company that paid just 0.008 percent in tax on their total income in 2014-2015, one billion dollars of taxpayer’s money, say the Australian Greens.
“Under new tax transparency laws spearheaded by the Greens, the ATO today released figures showing multinational mining company Adani earned $487 million from its Australian enterprises but paid a measly $39,000 in taxes in the 2014-2015 financial year, said Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Senator for Queensland, Larissa Waters.
“That is just 0.008 percent of the total income earned by Adani’s operations in Australia, or 8 cents for every $1000.
“The federal government - with the support of Queensland Labor - wants to give Adani a billion dollars to build a railway for its Reef-destroying mega coal mine.
“Coal driven global warming has already bleached 22 percent of the Reef’s coral, but both levels of government are pushing ahead with Australia’s biggest coal mine.
“Australians and Queenslanders care deeply about the Great Barrier Reef. They don't want the Reef or the jobs of 70,000 Queenslanders that depend on its survival destroyed for Adani’s profits.
“It's now clearer than ever that big corporations call the shots, not ordinary Australians. Our regions are doing it tough, but instead of showering tax avoiding multinationals with our taxpayer dollars, we should be investing in clean energy that will create new jobs and won’t kill the Reef and the 70,000 jobs that depend on it,” said Senator Waters.
