The Queensland Greens say the Premier's refusal to rule out an early election shows Labor's support for the referendum to bring in four year terms is a sham.
Greens spokesperson Andrew Bartlett says "the Labor and Liberal National Parties, as well as business and union leaders, have all argued governments need longer in power to supposedly provide greater certainty, yet now the Premier is refusing to rule out an early election, and some business leaders are saying an early election is needed to restore certainty!"
"Labor cannot possibly argue for longer terms for Parliament whilst at the same time refusing to rule out an early election just because they don't like the makeup of the current Parliament anymore."
"The hypocrisy of Labor and business in supporting fewer elections and longer terms for governments shows that the referendum is nothing to do with better democracy and all about making it easier for those with power to do what they like without having to worry about being held to account by the public."
"The Greens will continue to oppose the referendum for four year terms as nothing but a grab for more power by those who see democracy as an irritating inconvenience, rather than the guiding foundation of our society."
