Australian Greens Deputy Leader, Queensland Senator Larissa Waters is today launching the Greens’ candidate for Dawson in the federal election, Jonathon Dykyj.

“I’m so proud to launch Jonathon Dykyj, our exceptional, experienced candidate for Dawson, who is a strong advocate for a sustainable, bright future for Mackay that embraces job-rich 21st century industries,” Senator Waters said.

“Jonathon has lived in Mackay for more than a decade and through his work at the local council and engagement with local environment and sporting groups, he has developed a deep understanding of and connection with community.

“Jonathon understands that with the mining boom ending, Mackay workers need a transition plan to move into 21st century industries where the jobs will last but the big parties are failing them.

“The economic reality is that coal will not continue to play the traditional role it has in Mackay’s past, because the coal price is in structural decline, with the world moving to renewable alternatives to halt global warming,” Senator Waters said.

Mr Dykyj said Dawson had a lot to gain out of the global transition towards a clean energy future.

“Mackay has a multi‐layered industrial sector that crosses design, manufacturing, engineering, construction and maintenance.

“While industry focus has been directed towards the resources sector, the skills, knowledge and experience can be transferred to renewable energy.

“Let’s embrace the exciting opportunities that lie ahead.  In recent years we have seen the unfortunate social and economic costs of putting all of our eggs in the coal basket.

“The Great Barrier Reef and our water supplies, which underpin our sustainable tourism and agricultural industries, have been jeopardised for too long for the sake of the big mining companies, whose profits mostly flow offshore.

“Let’s protect our environment and the sustainability of our local economy and job prospects by embracing the clean energy future,”  Mr Dykyj said.
