Statement on Adani and its CEO

2015-11-13

On 12 and 13 November 2015 my office issued two press releases which the Chief Executive of Adani Mining Australia, Mr Jeyakumar Janakaraj, has complained contained defamatory statements.

I stand by all statements made in relation to the history of the Adani group of companies. In relation to Mr Janakaraj, I retract all statements about him personally, barring the fact that Mr Janakaraj was director of operations of Konkola Copper Mines, a mining company operating in Zambia, when the company was charged with and pleaded guilty in 2010 to causing a serious pollution spill. No criminal or other charges were brought against Mr Janakaraj personally in relation to this matter.

The Australian Greens remain strongly opposed the Adani group’s proposed Carmichael coal mine in the Galilee Basin, and the associated rail link and port expansion at Abbot Point on the shores of the Great Barrier Reef. We will continue to campaign against this reckless project as we believe it is a threat to the Great Barrier Reef, dangerous for the global climate, and the wrong direction for Queensland’s future.
