I re-emphasise the Greens Federal Party Room’s great concern about allegations of sexual assault involving a NSW Greens member, which has had further coverage in recent media reports. We acknowledge the pain, distress and fear experienced by the woman who raised this matter, and her courage in coming forward.
As Larissa’s statement below outlines, Party Room immediately raised this with the party and sought action to review our state and territory branches’ policies and procedures.
I reiterate that sexual harassment, violence or assault are not tolerated at any level of the Greens. We encourage and support individuals to approach their state party convenor for information about their rights and responsibilities.

Statement by Larissa Waters, Former Australian Greens spokesperson for Women (21 June 2017):
Members of the Greens Federal Party Room are extremely distressed to hear about allegations of sexual assault involving a member of NSW Greens. Our first priority is with the woman who has come forward.
As soon as this issue was drawn to our attention, the Australian Greens Federal Party Room formally asked, via our National Convenors, that all state branches review their policies around sexual harassment and how complaints are being dealt with. Federal Party Room has asked Member Bodies to ensure members are made aware of these policies and procedures to ensure a culture free from sexism and sexual harassment.
We have a responsibility to be proactive in creating a safe environment for people of all genders and supporting those who have the courage to speak out.
