By The Green Issue Editors
In this Issue, Senator Dorinda Cox, our sitting senator seeking re-election, explains how a vote for The Greens would be beneficial to Western Australians. Green Issue asks Felicity Townsend, Greens candidate for Fremantle, how she is tracking in her campaign. As The Greens do not rely on wealthy corporate donors to fund their campaigning, greater reliance is placed on doorknocking. Indeed this activity aligns very well with our “participatory democracy” pillar.
Over the last two months, the war in Ukraine has dominated headlines. In the midst of that war, the Ukrainian Greens found time to congratulate the Tasmanian Greens on the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the first Green political party, in Tasmania. Although Russia has now adopted a barbarian role, we are reminded to distinguish between the Russian people and their present government, and all of the cultural and philosophical contributions to humanity emanating from Russia.
The Ukraine war has been timely for those on the Australian election trail wanting to promote national security as a major election issue. However, it is also timely to remind of Australia’s sorry history in following the USA into wars over the last half century, facilitated by “defence” treaties from SEATO to AUKUS.
We also include two-monthly reports from our MPs. Senator Jordon Steele-John discusses disability issues, the proposal for denticare, legislating Maeve’s Law and his reflections on the recent federal budget. Brad Pettitt provides a concise critique of how the Morrison and McGowan governments are failing to address the climate crisis.
