We hope you enjoy our December 2024 edition of Green Issue as it features a range of articles on the big issues of the upcoming 2025 election campaigns, especially climate change and housing – but also the theme of localism.
Perth (Federal) and Fremantle (State) are two of our highest priority seats and we have reports on both campaigns. Sophie Greer’s article celebrates the amazing efforts of her Perth campaign team, while Brad Pettitt makes a strong case for focusing on local issues in Fremantle, arguing that Labor’s neglect of this safe seat creates openings for The Greens to campaign on our positive alternatives.
Greens campaigners in every state and federal electorate are acutely aware that the housing crisis is just about the hottest issue for everyone in town. Rob Delves makes the case that it should be viewed as an inequality issue rather than a crisis of affordability.
Bill Hare is a local person but also a very well-known climate scientist who has attended every single COP ̶ so who better to analyse the recent COP 29? Mark Brogan from the Green’s Climate Crisis Working Group has contributed an evaluation of the Albanese Government’s Safeguard Mechanism, posing the question of whether it is an emissions watchdog or an emissions enabler. Rounding out the climate change theme we have Mark Hopwood’s exposure of the favouritism enjoyed by fossil giants such as Woodside in our own WA Petrostate.
AUKUS is quintessentially international but also a very local issue, especially to residents of the Fremantle and Brand electorates. Chris Johansen has been a ruthless critic of the AUKUS beast, from the very second it burst from the mouth of Morrison. In this December Green Issue he reviews a recent book tracing the behind the scenes origins and implications of AUKUS.
And we have end of year reports from Our MPs, Senator Jordon Steele-John and Brad Pettitt, MLC.
