The benefits of productivity gains over past decades have been swallowed up by employers in higher profit margins.
Meanwhile, workers have maintained standard working hours with minimal wage increases.
A 4-day work week would reduce burnout and encourage a work-life balance that leaves more time for the important things in life.
Trials around the world have demonstrated that by shortening working hours while maintaining pay levels, workplaces can keep productivity steady or actually improve it.
That's why the Greens have a plan to:
- Support a national 4-day work week test case through the Fair Work Commission
- Establish a National Institute for the Four Day Work Week, funded at $10 million a year to develop a clear implementation plan
- Implement a 4-day work week trial via the National Institute for the Four Day Work Week
Did you know?
The Senate Inquiry into Work and Care in 2023 recommended that the Government undertake a four-day work week trial based on the 100:80:100 model, where employees retain 100% of their salary while reducing their hours to 80% and maintaining 100% productivity.
