Every renter knows what it’s like to feel powerless in their own home.
To have to weigh up whether to ask for basic repairs or push back on an unfair rent hike against the risk their lease won’t be renewed.
To live with the knowledge that their bond might be kept unfairly or that they can be pushed out of their homes with little notice.
Renters know the system has been stacked against them.
It’s designed by wealthy property investors, for wealthy property investors.
This is why the Greens have a plan to establish a National Renters Protection Authority that’s in the corner of renters – ready to fight for them.
Under our plan, the NRPA will have the power to:
- Independently investigate breaches of rental law
- Fine individual landlords up to $15,650 or real estate agents up to $78,250 for breaching renters rights
- Offer advocacy, advice and education to renters across the country
The NRPA would play a key role in enforcing new national tenancy standards. The Greens’ plan would distribute $2.5 billion each year to the states and territories that adopt new model rental laws.
Those include freezing and capping rent increases, access to 5-year leases, a guaranteed right to lease renewal, and stronger minimum standards for heating, cooling, insulation and ventilation.
Did you know?
Right now, in most states and territories there is nothing stopping a landlord from tossing renters out of their homes at the end of a fixed term lease?
Under the Greens plan, renters will have a guaranteed right to renew their lease – enforced by the NRPA!
