Artificial intelligence is the new extractive industry and Australia’s regulations are lagging behind.
That's why the Greens have set up a parliamentary inquiry into AI data centres in Australia. With community consultation an afterthought amidst this rapid expansion, we want to make sure your voice can be heard in Canberra.
HOW TO MAKE A SUBMISSION
Submissions are to be uploaded on the parliamentary website. Please note all submissions will be made public.
THE BEST SUBMISSIONS:
- Begin with a short introduction about yourself or the organisation you represent.
- Are relevant and highlight your own perspective or experience.
- Are concise, generally no longer than 2-4 pages.
- Share your personal/your communities story or experience.
the committee wants to know:
- What are your concerns about data centres in your area?
- Have you or your community experienced any impacts on water, power, air, sound, pollution that could be caused by a data centre?
- To what extent has the community been consulted on a data centre in your area?
- Anything else you have to say about the rapid growth of data centres in your community.
ABOUT THE INQUIRY
This inquiry is an important opportunity for communities who have had their voices ignored, to finally be heard. Right now we’re seeing a push across Australia to build huge data mining centres with little community consultation and very little given back to the community - so this is very important.
The inquiry will look into the effectiveness of current regulations, existing and future deals between the government and global AI companies, and the potential impacts of these data centres on the environment, including water and energy.
The inquiry will be accepting submissions from the public to inform its recommendations. You don’t have to be an expert to make a submission: the more community voices, the better.
