How to make a great submission to the Electric Vehicles Inquiry

help shape Victoria's transition to electric vehicles

The Victorian Greens have successfully secured an Inquiry into Electricity Supply for Electric Vehicles - and now we need your help.

This inquiry is an important opportunity for you to tell the government what changes they should make to facilitate Victoria’s transition to electric vehicles.

Your voice is powerful.

If you have ideas around EVs in Victoria - including EV uptake, the availability of public and private EV charging, or the potential of EV batteries to power homes and communities - please put in a submission.

What will the inquiry do?

This inquiry will be led by the Victorian Parliament Legislative Council’s Economy and Infrastructure Committee, and will focus on how Victoria can harmonise electric vehicles with electricity supply and demand - things like making sure EV charging works with our electricity grid rather than against it, installing enough public charging infrastructure around the state, facilitating EV uptake and bidirectional charging (using your car to power your home or the grid), improving the sustainability of the EV supply chain, and more. You can read the full terms of reference here

The inquiry is accepting public submissions until 31 Oct 2025, followed by hearings.

How can I help?

You don’t need to be an expert. Making a submission to the inquiry is a powerful way for you to tell the Victorian Labor Government they need to act to make sure our state is ready to support a widespread transition to EVs.

The idea of making a submission may sound daunting, but it’s a simple process. You can submit in text, audio or video format, on behalf of an organisation, or as an individual.

What should I say in my submission?

Your submission doesn’t need to be long or detailed. Just think about your own personal experience, and what you and your community members care about.

Do you want to trade in your old petrol car for an EV, but don’t feel like you can because you don’t have a driveway to charge it in? Or maybe you live rurally and charging at home is fine, but you’re not so sure you can say the same about your destination. Or you’ve heard stories about EV owners powering their communities after weather disasters and you want to be part of that. Whatever experiences, ideas or expertise you have, the government should know about it.

You might consider questions like:

  • What barriers are stopping you or the people you know from switching to an EV?
  • How can we encourage people to charge their EVs during periods of peak electricity supply, and reduce charging during period of peak demand?
  • What role should electricity distribution companies play in rolling out EV infrastructure?
  • What should we do with old EV batteries once they’re removed from vehicles?

How do I submit?

  1. You can make your submission here. You can type directly into the submission form, and/or upload up to 3 attachments (images, documents, audio or video files).
  2. The submission form will also ask you to:
    1. Fill in your personal details
    2. Choose whether you’d like your submission to be published with your name, published without your name, or not published at all
    3. Indicate whether you are interested in appearing before the committee hearings to talk about your submission (Note: this is absolutely not required, but if you can do it, it’s really important! Send us an email on tim.read@parliament.vic.gov.au and we’ll help you get ready.)
