Get the Facts

GET THE FACTS.

Two news headlines saying "Right-wing group targets Greens in million-dollar ad blitz" and "Tony Abbott advising controversial conservative lobby group Advance Australia"

Across the country, we’re seeing far-right and anti-renewables organisations running misinformation campaigns against the Greens and climate independents.

They’re often not the 'community campaigns' they claim they are – coal billionaires fund them and have deep ties to the Liberal Party (in one case, Tony Abbott has been on the board).

And, if we had a dollar for every lie they told about us, we’d use it to get dental into Medicare.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS >

SO WHY ARE THEY DOING IT?

Experts are predicting a minority government, which means the stakes in this election are higher than ever.

We’re fighting to keep Dutton out, tax big corporations and billionaires to fund things like dental into Medicare, and take strong climate action by stopping more coal and gas.

You know who doesn’t like that? The Liberals, billionaires and fossil fuel corporations.

You’ll see more and more dirty tactics this election, because we’re on the cusp of winning seats across the country and taking the balance of power in parliament.

The Greens are the only party to refuse donations from big corporations. While attack groups push misinformation campaigns to get Dutton elected and protect their own interests, we’re fighting for you.

If you want change, vote for it.

What They Say vs The Truth

Why are shady misinformation groups, including ‘Advance Australia’ and ‘Better Australia,’ attacking the Greens and climate independents?

Far-right lobby group Advance Australia led the misleading campaign against the Voice, and have spent years trying to convince whoever will listen that climate change is a “hoax” and distracting from real issues by pushing fake (often deeply harmful) culture wars.

Now they’ve announced that their “sole focus” at the next election is to try and destroy the Greens.

Experts say the campaign is a “textbook example of malinformation” to manipulate voter’s perception.

They have deep ties to the Liberal party (Tony Abbott sat on their board), and they are trying to get Dutton elected as Prime Minister. The Greens are a major blocker to Dutton and his Trump-like policies.

Their goal is to spread fear and misinformation to stop the Greens from gaining the balance of power after this election. There are no “truth in advertising” laws, so we can’t stop them lying about us. But, with your support, we can show them at the ballot box!

Does the Liberal Party give money to these attack groups?

Yes. While Advance Australia claims to be an “independent lobby group”, it has deep financial and political ties to the Liberal Party. In the 2023-24 financial year alone, Advance received over $15.6 million in donations, including $500,000 from the Liberal Party’s investment arm, the Cormack Foundation.

Advance exists to run attack campaigns that benefit the Liberals and their corporate backers, using misinformation and fear tactics to manipulate voters.

While they try to present themselves as a grassroots movement, their funding sources tell the real story — they are a Liberal-backed operation designed to protect billionaire interests.

They’re campaigning against Greens policies that could help us all, like dental into Medicare and making supermarket price gouging illegal.

In contrast, the Greens refuse donations from big corporations. Our average donation is just $42.69.

What can I do to push back against disinformation?

Right now, there are no truth in political advertising laws in Australia, which means attack groups can lie, mislead, and fearmonger with zero consequences.

They exploit this loophole to flood social media with misinformation designed to manipulate voters.

The Greens support strong truth in political advertising laws to stop these kinds of dirty tactics.

The best way to fight back is to call out the lies and spread the facts. When you see Advance’s misleading ads, fact-check them, report them, and share accurate information with friends and family.

Voting 1 Greens is also a direct way to reject their billionaire-backed agenda and support truth in politics.

Who pays more tax under the Greens’ tax plan—billionaires or everyday people?

The Greens policies tax big corporations and the richest group of people in the country.

Under the current system, the average nurse pays more tax than a major corporation. 1 in 3 big corporations pay no tax. We think that needs to change.

Our plan increases taxes for big corporations, fossil fuel giants and billionaires, not everyday Australians.

The Greens want to tax billionaires and corporate giants (1 in three of whom pay no tax), not workers or families, to fund the things we all need – dental and mental health under Medicare, build affordable homes, and delivering cheaper power through renewables for your home or business.

Our plan is independently costed by the Parliamentary Budget Office.

What is the Greens drugs policy?

We think it’s time we listen to the experts and implement common sense approaches to minimise harm and risk – our approach focuses on harm reduction measures, such as pill testing and supervised injecting facilities, to save lives and provide people with the support they need.

The Greens do not have a proposal in our election platform to ‘decriminalise or legalise all drugs’.

Right now, we have a system designed to criminalise and stigmatise people in our community which has led to tragic outcomes. When it comes to drugs, we don’t want to see people locked up for smoking a joint.

Who actually benefits from the current housing crisis, and why do they attack the Greens?

Wealthy property developers, and the big banks benefit from the housing crisis.

Labor and the Liberals are giving $176 billion in tax handouts to wealthy property investors.

The housing crisis isn’t an accident. The Greens want to genuinely fix the housing crisis, not tinker around the edges. We want to regulate the big banks so they can’t rip you off on your home loan. And that’s why these powerful interests attack us – to protect their own interests.

Why are groups falsely claiming the Greens will tax your family’s inheritance?

Because they want to scare you into voting against your own interests.

The Greens do not want you to pay an inheritance tax. This is a scare campaign attack groups keep recycling (the only thing they do recycle, probably) – calling it a ‘death tax’.

They use this lie to distract from our real tax plan: making big corporations and billionaires pay their fair share so we can fund services like dental and mental healthcare into Medicare, affordable housing, and 50c public transport fares.
