The office of Queensland Greens Senator Penny Allman-Payne is seeking applications for an ongoing part-time Constituent & Community Advocate, based in the Senator’s electorate office in Gladstone, Central Queensland.

About the position:

The Constituent & Community Advocate will assess and respond to incoming correspondence from constituents, oversee assistance to constituents, and work on cases relating to NDIS, Centrelink, migration and other government agencies.

The constituent liaison will identify opportunities for campaigning and communications arising from constituent contact and work collaboratively with the team to action these. This is a key team member whose work is essential to the success of the Senator's objectives.

Reporting to the Chief of Staff, you may occasionally be required to travel interstate and may also be required to support the Senator at public events.

The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to: 

  • Engaging in casework to help Queensland constituents navigate government services and support and advocate for those with more complex needs.
  • Completing intake procedures and responding to incoming correspondence.
  • Liaising with community-based support services, government agencies, social housing providers and state housing departments, local councils, social workers, legal advisers and others as required.
  • Drafting ministerial letters, letters of support and other correspondence.
  • Keeping detailed case notes and records of communication and supporting documents.
  • Working with the rest of the team to identify case studies for communications purposes and connect constituent issues to the Senator’s broader parliamentary work and campaigns.

The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:

  • Ability to work as part of a small team, under time constraints and tight deadlines, with a high level of independence.
  • Highly developed written, verbal, organisational and interpersonal communication skills and empathy with constituents facing difficulties.
  • Strong analytical skills and demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically, solve problems and adapt to changing circumstances.
  • Relevant qualifications and/or experience in advocacy or casework.
  • Alignment with Greens values and a commitment to making positive change. Experience talking about Greens policies and priorities is highly desirable.
  • Sound knowledge of Australian Greens’ policies and experience distilling complex policy information into clear correspondence.

Employment conditions:

This position will be offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, and employment conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027 including:

  • This is a part-time role of three days per week.
  • A commencing full-time equivalent salary of between $74,537 and $78,911 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills.
  • An additional Electorate Staff Allowance may be payable in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work and any travel requirements.
  • Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements).
  • An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will also be payable.

  • An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension
  • The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check
  • Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act
  • The successful applicant will be required to comply with their obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
