About the role

This is a short term leave cover role from January 27 to May 16 2025. Applications close 3 December 2024. 

The Policy Adviser is a member of the Leader’s Office (LO) Policy and Parliamentary Team, and reports to the Senior Policy and Parliament Manager.

The key responsibility of the role is to advise the Office of Adam Bandt MP on major policy projects relating to the strategic objectives as set by the Australian Greens Party Room, particularly in the climate and energy portfolio.

The role will require primary research, stakeholder engagement and management, collecting supporting data and proof points, writing policy briefs and public facing documents and working closely with all members of the Leaders Office Policy and Parliament Team as well as policy advisers in other Greens MP’s offices.

This role is expected to be responsive to issues of the day and strategic priorities as it relates to matters in the climate and energy portfolio, as well as broader matters as needed.

There is additional supplementary work done on an ad-hoc basis, including contributions to team tactics and a contribution to the daily functioning of the electorate office.

Responsibilities

Major policy projects

  • Undertake work as part of the Leader’s Office Policy and Parliament team, including by:
    • Conducting reactive research and fact checking in relation to emerging political events
    • Conducting proactive research and support for new policy announcements
    • Coordinating positions with others members of the Greens Party room and their relevant advisers

Climate and energy policy

  • Provide strategic advice to the Leader and Leader’s Office on emerging policy matters in the climate and energy portfolio, including conducting related research
  • Drafting briefs, media releases, reports and associated documentation on climate and energy policy matters
  • Work with key stakeholders on climate and energy policy matters, including both parliamentary and third party organisations

Other duties 

  • As directed, including contributions to team tactics and a contribution to the daily functioning of the electorate office. 
     

Required Skills & Experiences

  • Excellent written, oral and interpersonal communication skills
  • Relevant prior experience and expertise working in a policy or parliamentary setting, preferably on climate and energy policy or similar portfolio area
  • Capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to changing circumstances, and exercise sound political judgement.
  • Highly developed skills in preparing written content and demonstrated experience in translating policy content into resources for media, website and speeches
  • Excellent organisational skills, including demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and work to tight deadlines in a dynamic environment
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Australian Greens’ policies and the Australian political landscape
  • Understanding of and commitment to the values of the Australian Greens

Pay & Conditions

The position is offered as a non-ongoing position under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984, with employment conditions outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-2027. In addition to salary, employer-sponsored superannuation of 15% is offered. 

The position is offered at an EOB classification - base level and ESA to be determined based on experience.

All employees are expected to sign a confidentiality and code of conduct agreement prior to the commencement of their employment and to undertake any training required in the workplace. A probationary period of three months will apply.
