a future for all of us

By Adam Bandt, Leader of the Australian Greens

Folks, it’s on.

For the past year or two we’ve been preparing for this Federal Election.

We’ve had delays, we’ve been door knocking our knuckles off, we’ve got our ads online, and people are putting out their corflutes. The 2025 election is finally here.

I love campaigning and being out in community. It’s exhilarating and a great opportunity for us to increase our numbers in Parliament.

It's been a huge March. I was at Mardi Gras in Sydney and it was an honour to march alongside the LGBTIQA+ community. This month also saw me make my public DJ-ing debut in my electorate of Melbourne.

I was in Brisbane following ex-tropical cyclone Alfred impacting Queensland and NSW, and spoke about the real need for disaster recovery payments to be doubled - and how they should be paid for by coal and gas corporations. And in Richmond in Northern NSW, we called for a Climate Response Service to support the communities, volunteers and services that are dealing with these worsening coal and gas-fuelled disasters.

We had one last week of Parliament with a disappointing Budget that failed to tax the big corporations to deliver real cost of living relief, like getting dental into Medicare.

With the election date of May 3 now official, we need to keep Dutton out and get Labor to act.

There’s going to be a minority government, say the experts. Last time there was a minority government, the Greens got dental into Medicare for kids. Now we want to finish the job.

And in the balance of power we can push hard to get some important things done.

Over the coming weeks, it’s our job to share the Greens’ positive plan and let people in our community know that, if you want change, the first step is to vote for it.

To do that, we need to remember something: campaigning is fun, our policies are popular, and our #1 job is to explain to people how we’re going to achieve them.

But it’s always important to remember the golden rule: do all the basics right, and the big things will take care of themselves.

This year, we’re in reach of winning new seats across the country.

From Macnamara and Wills in Victoria that neighbour my electorate, to Richmond in NSW, Sturt in SA, and Perth in WA - these are the seats we can win to grow our numbers in Parliament.

We’re also working hard to re-elect our incredible Lower House MPs in Queensland, as well as our amazing Senators across the country.

Labor and the Liberals - and their billionaire backers - have come at us hard, trying to push us backwards. But we’re holding firm.

All of this is possible because of the wonderful humans around the country who week-in, week-out get out there and campaign.

Over the last few years, we’ve faced a cost of living crisis, where millions of people have become ever more worried about the future. But we’ve met the moment and pushed policies like genuinely affordable housing, making it free to see the GP and wiping student debt, while stopping new coal and gas mines and ending native forest logging.

We’ve going to face more challenges, but we’re a party who can come together to face the moment and fight for a future for all of us.
