A cheatsheet to getting through the 2024 holiday season

To say 2024 has been big would be an understatement.

If you’re like us, you’re probably super tired. And also a little nervous… with the festive season well underway - it does come with its challenges, which could be in the form of a conversation with your Liberal-loving aunty or that second cousin who thinks the Greens don’t do anything useful…

Last year we brought you a political conversations cheatsheet to getting through the holidays and with such a massive year now wrapped – here’s some helpful tips to talking politics with your family over the coming weeks.

How are the Greens going to afford all this anyway?

Here’s what you can say:

  • 1 in 3 big corporations currently pays no tax! And right now - Labor and the Liberals both take millions in donations from big corporations. They’re putting their corporate mates before you. It’s just not fair that Woolies and Coles can make billions in profit but we have to work harder to afford our groceries and bills.
  • The Greens will make these big corporations pay their fair share of tax. Our plan would raise $514 billion to fund things people really need - mental and dental health into Medicare, and a freeze and caps on rents to mention just a few.
  • We could also phase out the massive tax handouts to wealthy property investors (negative gearing and the capital gains tax concession), which will cost $176 billion over the next 10 years.

The Greens are too radical!

Here’s what you can say:

  • Millions of people can’t afford their rent, mortgage and groceries at the moment, while the climate crisis continues to spiral out of control. We won’t address these challenges by tinkering around the edges.
  • The key things the Greens are pushing for are already backed by most Australians: covering mental and dental health under Medicare, no more coal and gas, making it free to see the GP again, and ending tax handouts for wealthy property investors.
  • The Liberals and Labor take millions in donations from big corporations every single year. The Greens don’t – and they’re fighting for you. That’s not so radical!

Voting Greens Is a Wasted Vote

Here’s what you can say:

  • There’s no such thing as a wasted vote. We have preferential voting in Australia and you decide where your preferences go.
  • Giving the Greens your number 1 vote improves the chance of a Greens MP being elected in your area and sends a clear message to the major parties that they are not doing enough to get your vote.
  • We can’t keep voting for the same two parties and expecting a different result.
  • The Greens will never support a Dutton Liberal Government, which would take us backwards. A vote for us is a vote to keep Dutton out and push Labor to take real action on the cost of living and climate crises.

The Greens are blockers, they don’t compromise.

Here’s what you can say:

  • The Greens simply want Labor to do more than just tinker around the edges of the many crises we face.
  • With housing, the Greens offered many opportunities to compromise. But Labor decided they’d rather let their laws fail than negotiate with the Greens to deliver real action to fix the housing crisis.
  • Since the last election, the Greens have successfully negotiated many fantastic outcomes for our community, including $3 billion of extra funding for public and community housing, the right to disconnect from work, and putting a hard cap on pollution.
  • With more Greens in Parliament, we can continue to force the government to work with us to get better outcomes for everyday people.

Navigating the holiday season is never the easiest, so if you are feeling uncertain about heading to that family lunch - you’re definitely not alone!

Ways that have helped us include finding common ground, staying true to your values and knowing that there are people across the country there with you. And remember to recognise when to step away and that you can give yourself permission to not to engage at all!

We are in for a whirlwind of a 2025 - with an opportunity to elect more Greens than ever before to Federal Parliament. Have a restful holiday break, and come back refreshed to help us run the biggest campaign we’ve ever had.

We hope the tricky political conversations are as productive and stress-free as can be!
