Q&A with Campbell Gome, Victorian Greens Candidate for Northcote
Campbell Gome is the Victorian Greens candidate for Northcote in the Victorian state election this November. A teacher, unionist, climate activist and Northcote local of 27 years, Campbell has seen the community both grow and flourish, and come up against the weight of rising inequality, a worsening housing crisis, and a rapidly closing window for effective climate action. Campbell talks about hope, determination and change.
What drew you to being a part of the Greens? What has been the best part of being in the movement?
I've campaigned for social and climate justice all my life, based on the values instilled in me by my Scottish father, Jewish mother and Gunditjmara stepfather – working hard for what is right, serving the community, and tackling injustice. It’s why I’m an eco-socialist.
Becoming a parent was a key point of inflection in my journey with the Greens. My theory of change evolved to recognise that, as well as action in the community, streets and courts, we also needed people taking political action. It was then that I went from being a volunteer to officially joining the Greens and taking on various roles at the branch and state level.
The best part of our movement is seeing people power in action as our volunteers form living, caring and thriving communities of change. As Greens, we get to show that love and hope is stronger than fear and hate.
Why did you put your hand up to run?
As a teacher, I see the future in my classroom every single day, and I feel a deep duty of care to the kids who will inherit the consequences of today’s choices.
When I saw young people around the world, including my students and my daughters, organise rallies and strikes in 2018 to fight for their future, I knew it was time to get more involved. Taking more peaceful and nonviolent direct action in the streets and forests, and putting my hand up for preselection was a very natural progression.
Northcote, my much-loved home of nearly 30 years, is a very engaged, progressive and compassionate community. We turned Northcote Green in 2017 and we came very close again when I first ran in 2022. This November, we can do it again. Our community is demanding better, and I get to help them make it happen.
What’s been the best part of the campaign so far?
I’m just so humbled, and excited, to see our local Greens community come together in this super-charged, people-powered campaign. There’s nothing better than working alongside a group of tireless and passionate volunteers. They inspire and energise me every single day.
The very best part is working with others to sow the seeds of change and seeing them grow, flourish and bloom.
What’s the best thing we can do right now for your campaign?
We got so close in 2022. On a wafer-thin gap of 184 votes, all eyes will be on Northcote – the most marginal seat in the state. This is going to be hard and it’s going to be close. We hope you will join us.
Every hour volunteered and every dollar donated really matters in Northcote this year. We’d love to welcome you to the team (interstate call parties are also an option 😉). And of course financial donations also make a huge difference. Your contribution, no matter how small, will help us reach the crucial voters, the ones that, at the moment, are just out of reach.
What would be your first priorities as MP?
Victorians are being ripped off by a system that has been corrupted by the ultra-wealthy, dodgy deals and dodgy donations. It’s no wonder people are fed up!
There’s so much to do; here’s my top 5:
- Supporting Treaty in Victoria. There can be no social, environmental or climate justice here without justice for First Nations.
- Making polluters pay for the damage they cause.
- Making housing affordable by building more public housing, capping rents and getting rid of stamp duty for first home buyers and down-sizers.
- Fully funding our public schools so that future generations are able to thrive and so Victoria can be worthy of the ‘Education State’ name.
- Giving our anti-corruption watchdog IBAC the power it needs to investigate and stamp out corruption.
What gives you hope? and why?
You’ve just said one of my favourite words! Our Northcote campaign knows that hope isn't passive. Hope is active. It’s what inspires and enables people to connect, organise, and push for the change we so desperately need. Hope and determination are the heart and soul of our campaign.
I feel hope every doorknock, when I get to connect with volunteers and voters. Our Northcote community cares deeply about what is happening to others in our backyard and around the world. That gives me hope all the time. That’s why I never tire of campaigning.
