a once in a generation opportunity
By Adam Bandt, Greens Leader & MP for Melbourne
We live in such an incredibly beautiful country and summer is such a special time. Times we hold dear all year, with those dearest to us.
The long days give you time to think, try new things, swim in the ocean and sleep under the stars.
You feel a glimpse of the country that might have once been.
Lands and seas on which people thrived for tens of thousands of years before colonisation.
After colonisation, generations of people from around the world have come here to build a new life. And now, together, they eat by large bodies of water with their families too.
It reminded me of a few simple things. This land and these seas are rich. This country is rich. We are a wealthy country.
We can live wonderful lives here, if we look after the place, and hand it onto future generations better than we found it.
But we need to share the great wealth of this country.
In a wealthy country like ours, everyone should be able to afford the basics.
A home, food, and access to world-class healthcare and education. To earn enough to look after one another and get through a crisis as a community.
But, right now, we don’t share, we allow some people to make massive profits off the wealth of this land. Sometimes these actions destroy the lands and the waters, other times it drives the climate crisis and threatens us all.
Some people get special treatment to buy up scores of homes, while others can’t keep a roof over their head.
These conditions have been created over generations.
Now, with an election simply a few short months away, we have a once in a generation chance to share the wealth of this country more fairly. To protect these lands and waters, and hand them onto future generations better than we found it.
Over the coming months, we’re going to be running a huge ground campaign around the country where our incredible doorknockers will be having meaningful conversations with those who will help decide the future of our country.
There is a lot of work to do, but I am so hopeful that together our movement can rise to meet the challenge.
After the election, most people expect there to be a minority government. And the Greens are within reach of winning new seats across the country.
Last time there was a minority government, we got dental into Medicare for kids and strong climate laws.
Now, we have a chance to get it for everyone.
We can seize this moment, fix the crises we’re facing and secure a better future for all of us.
