we are turning perth green!
By Sophie Greer, Federal Greens Candidate for Perth
When I think about the last 12 months of campaigning and the goals we’ve set ourselves, I can’t help but feel so proud of our amazing team.
In my mind, our biggest priority was always going to be maintaining our values: joy, community, collaboration, and fun have been at the core of my work in Greens spaces for the better part of 10 years now, and this campaign has been no different.
Knowing that, if just 1 in 10 people change their vote, we can win Perth, has been so empowering for our team. We know we can do this! And we know we can do this together.
Some of the best moments in 2024 have revolved around our absolutely wonderful doorknocking crew. Remember when we got almost 100 of us together in Hyde Park, knocked on thousands of doors, and celebrated our movement with Adam Bandt? Or even the incredible feeling when we hit our 1,000th door way back in May… or our 10,000th months later!
It’s the little moments that contribute to our joy, too. Every single conversation has been an opportunity for change and our team has made the most at every door. So many chats have been had about housing, the climate crisis, healthcare access, and so many local issues that we align with our community members on.
We have these chats every single weekend, but one really stood out last Saturday! One of our volunteers knocked on the door of a local man who works for one of the major mining corporations here in WA.
He was actually extremely disappointed in Labor’s recent decision to extend Woodside’s destruction of WA’s North West Shelf, and was really grateful to have the chance to speak about these issues with somebody from the Greens - it was a huge opportunity to hear his perspective, and a massive chance to talk about the urgent changes we want to see made in this space.
You never know who you’re going to speak to, or how they might be persuaded! Our volunteer left that conversation feeling as though this person knew without a doubt how powerful their vote can be at the next election.
Here in WA we have two elections within weeks of each other in 2025. Taking on a State and Federal election is going to be a big challenge, but at the end of 2024, me and the team are as motivated as ever to turn the Federal Seat of Perth Green.
We have built a team full of community leaders: from our neighbourhood organisers, doorknock and data captains, to our stunning group of local candidates…
Together, we really are building to win, and I can’t wait to see what we achieve together in 2025! (And how much fun we have doing it!)
