we're the party 4 u, wa

By Your Greens WA Team

WA: you’ve proven that people from all walks of life are looking for an alternative to the major parties. You’re sick of the major parties ignoring the needs of everyday people. And you know that you can’t keep voting for the same two parties and expecting a different result This election, you voted for change. Now, our WA Legislative Council team is ready to deliver it.

THE WA POLITICAL LANDSCAPE

Big business dominates WA politics, with gas corporations and property developers funnelling money to both major parties. Mark McGowan and Roger Cook’s Labor governments have been some of the most conservative in history - failing to act on housing, climate, environment and cost of living despite their record-breaking majorities.

WA also has the lowest rental vacancy rate in Australia. Renters can still be evicted on no grounds, plus the state has the lowest tree canopy across the country, rising emissions, no 2030 target and the fewest new renewable energy projects in the pipeline. Despite WA Labor having the power to create change, they’ve stood by and watched big corporations exploit these crises.

We knew we had to meet voters where they were at. We had to be the change when other parties were criminally unambitious, playing politics, and tinkering around the edges of our state’s biggest issues.

THE POWER OF LOCAL GRASSROOTS CAMPAIGNS

In Victoria Park, home to one of our largest swings (7.5%), the Save Burswood Park campaign played a key role. Earlier this year, WA Labor announced a plan to build a $217.5 million race track on top of the largest park in the electorate, without any community consultation. The announcement caused upset in Victoria Park, and surrounding electorates, including South Perth, Belmont and Cannington.

Jack Gordon-Manley (State Candidate for Victoria Park), and Clint Uink (State Candidate for the Legislative Council and Federal Candidate for Swan) immediately harnessed the community’s passion, designing leaflets, corflutes, social media advertising and social media content - proving the power of grassroots activism.

This led to Victoria Park’s best ever result, and cements its spot as one of our most winnable lower house seats heading into the next electoral cycle.

Across the Swan River, another massive campaign was underway. As part of Sophie Greer’s campaign to win Perth in the Federal election, our team knocked on over 16,000 doors across the electorate, growing a 200-strong volunteer team of locals fighting for their communities. Their hard work secured a second-place finish in the state seat of Maylands and incredible swings across the neighbouring seats of Perth, Maylands, and Mt Lawley.

A HISTORIC RESULT

While the votes are still being counted, one thing is clear: WA wanted change, and we voted for it. The Greens are likely to enter the 42nd Parliament with 4 upper house MPs, gaining 3 seats and seeing our second best result ever.

We saw swings towards us across the state - with our largest swings in Victoria Park, Belmont, Cannington, Maylands and Bibra Lake.

Our best seats, all receiving more than 15 percent of the primary vote, were Maylands, Perth, Victoria Park, Kimberley, Bibra Lake, Warren-Blackwood, Mt Lawley and Fremantle.

This result was possible because of the hard work of our committed volunteers who dedicated their time to doorknock, phonebank, enter data, and hand out how-to-vote cards across the state.

We are truly grateful to everyone who volunteered on this campaign, and we hope to see you out on the Federal campaign trail.

LOOKING AHEAD TO THE FEDERAL ELECTION

The Federal election is the next step in the growth of our movement for climate action, affordable housing and integrity in government.

Historically, WA’s result has been within 1-2% of the Federal result, so a positive result in this State Election bodes well for the upcoming Federal Election.

WA, our movement doesn’t stop here – this is our opportunity to build on this momentum and re-elect Senator Jordon Steele-John to the Senate and turn Perth Green in the Federal Election!

WA, CONGRATS ON YOUR NEW UPPER HOUSE TEAM!

Our Legislative Council team is ready to get to work from day one and push the re-elected Labor government to scrap unfair evictions, ban fracking in the Kimberley, end mining in native Jarrah forests, and legislate strong action on climate change.

Our sole Greens MLC Brad Pettitt will now be joined by a team of at 3 more, including former ABC journalist Sophie McNeill, former WA MLC Tim Clifford, and forest campaigner Jess Beckerling. Now, Brad can sit with some friends at lunch, in between fighting for the issues that matter most!

Thank you, WA. You wanted change, and you voted for it.

We can’t wait to see what this Federal election holds for WA, and the rest of the country.

Here’s to the balance of power!
