Australian Greens statement on the death of Sultan Ali Keshtmand

2026-03-13

The Australian Greens extend their condolences to Hazara communities in Australia and around the world following the passing of Sultan Ali Keshtmand.

Keshtmand served twice as Afghanistan’s prime minister during the 1980s and was the first Hazara to lead an Afghan government — a significant milestone for a community that has long faced discrimination and persecution.

His passing will be felt deeply by many in the Hazara diaspora, including here in Australia, where his legacy remains an important symbol of representation and political participation for Hazara people.
