The Greens are excited to announce that Katie McCusker will be the candidate for the federal seat of Sturt at the next election.
Sturt is one of the Greens’ priority seats in South Australia. Sturt is the most marginal seat in South Australia with the incumbent Liberal MP holding it by less than 0.5%.
Sturt takes in the entirety of the state seat of Dunstan where the Greens recently achieved a historic 5.5% swing at the recent by-election.
Almost 30% of residents in Sturt are renters and almost 23% are aged under 34. The Greens vote amongst these groups is surging across the country.
Comment attributable to Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP:
“Sturt is an important opportunity for people to turn a Liberal seat Green.
“If just 1 in 10 voters in Sturt change their vote to the Greens, we can elect Katie McCusker and take a seat off Peter Dutton.
“Labor has failed renters, failed people who are trying to buy their first home and failed to act on the cost of living crisis.
“The Greens have a clear plan for the future: we’ll tax the big corporations and billionaires to fund affordable housing, a rent freeze and get dental and mental health into Medicare.
“If you’re disappointed in Labor but don’t want Dutton, you can vote for a strong, local Greens representative in Katie McCusker.”
Comment attributable to Senator Sarah Hanson-Young, Greens Senator for South Australia:
“At the next election, the people of Sturt are going to have a clear choice: another bloke for Peter Dutton’s toxic Liberal Party who wants to sow division and put nuclear reactors in our backyard, or Katie McCusker who will be a strong, local voice for the issues that really matter to people.
“The Greens are in it to win it. We saw incredible swings to the Greens in the recent Dunstan by-election and if those results are replicated, we will win.
“Katie is a local through and through, she grew up in the area and has been a passionate community advocate her whole life. She will be a strong local voice for the people of Sturt.
“The Greens have played a vital role in this term of parliament holding the Albanese Government to account on the core issues of housing, cost of living, climate and environment.
Turning Sturt Green means we can to hold the major parties to account and give voters a real voice in Canberra.”
Comment attributable to Greens candidate for Sturt, Katie McCusker
“I am honoured to have been chosen as the Greens Candidate for Sturt. I love my community, I’ve lived here all my life, and people tell me everyday they want to see a change.
“At the recent Dunstan by-election, we saw a historic swing to the Greens. People want solutions on cost of living, housing, and the environment - not Peter Dutton’s nasty politics of division.
“Our community here in Sturt should be represented by someone who shares our values.
“We have spoken to thousands of local residents over the past few months about what issues matter to them. We are consistently hearing the same things; cost of living, skyrocketing housing prices and climate change.
“My message to the people of Sturt is: if you want action on housing, cost of living and the environment, then vote Green. We can make change, we just need to vote for it.”
