Australian Greens Peace and Nuclear Disarmament spokesperson Senator Jordon Steele-John has called for Australian to sign the United Nation Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on the 75th Anniversary of first atomic bombing in Hiroshima.
"Today's Anniversary is a harrowing reminder of the diestructive power of these weapons, of which there are still thousands stockpiled around the world, and why we must continue to strive for peace," Steele-John said.
"Worldwide, thousands of atomic veterans and civilians continue to struggle with the lasting impacts of nuclear testing on their health and wellbeing.
"Nowhere is this felt more harshly and more deeply than amongst survivors, and the families of those who were lost, in the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.
"Over the last 75 years billions, if not trillions, of dollars have been wasted creating weapons that only serve to bring us closer to the destruction of humanity and for what?
"Each year the anniversary of the devastating events that occured in Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II should be a time for reflection, remembrance and an acknowledgment of the role that Australian Government's have played in the nuclear chain.
"It's time for Australia to sign the United Nations Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons and commit to their elimination."
