ACCC calls BS on Turnbull/Abbott war on renewable subsidies: Bandt

2017-10-16

Greens climate and energy spokesperson Adam Bandt MP today said the ACCC report has confirmed that power prices are going through the roof because big companies are gaming the electricity system, not because of renewable energy.

“The consumer watchdog has belled the cat. Power prices are going through the roof because big companies are gaming the system, not because of renewable energy targets,” said Mr Bandt.

“The ACCC has called BS on Malcolm Turnbull and Tony Abbott’s war on renewable subsidies.

“If the government was serious about cutting bills and cutting pollution, it would use this report to re-regulate power prices and increase the renewable energy target.

“The report unambiguously shows that the war on renewables is baseless.

“The best way to drive down power bills is to re-regulate prices and to provide incentives to get more cheap, clean renewables into the grid, more solar panels on rooftops and more batteries in homes and businesses.

“This government can’t be trusted. Their focus is on attacking renewables and dishing out public money to keep a dirty old clunker like Liddell open for longer.

“The Greens will introduce a bill this fortnight to prohibit taxpayer dollars from building or extending the life of coal-fired power stations.”
