2025-01-29

The Australian Greens are demonstrating their commitment to world-class public healthcare with today’s announcement that they will invest an additional $30.6 billion in local public hospitals nationwide.

Our public hospitals are co-funded by the State and Federal Governments. Today’s announcement will see the Greens commit to increasing the Federal Government's funding by announcing a pathway to 50/50 funding of public hospitals between the States and Territories and the Federal Government and removing the 6.5% cap on funding growth.

This announcement is the first part of the Greens' plan to invest in our local hospitals. Today's announcement will see significant investment in our local public hospitals, easing pressure the system. This investment will allow our public hospitals to offer additional services, support our healthcare workforce, and achieve the goal of everyone in our community being able to access the best possible healthcare in our public hospitals.

“Today’s announcement will see the Australian Greens commit to over $30 billion in funding for public hospitals across Australia.

“I’ve heard from so many nurses and doctors that they desperately need our governments to invest more in our local public hospitals. More of the same will not help improve people’s timely access to public hospital treatments. It’s time for the major parties to stop passing the buck between state and federal governments and do what the community expects; that is, invest the money needed to ensure everyone can access the best possible healthcare at our local public hospitals.

“I’m proud that our Greens plan to fund local public hospitals will see over $30 billion invested in our public hospitals over the next decade. We’re adopting a principle of 50/50 cost sharing between the States and Federal Government and we’re removing the arbitrary 6.5% federal government funding cap. This means that as the healthcare needs of our community increase, the Federal Government will continue to chip in the funds needed.

“Today’s announcement will support our health workforce, it’s a direct investment in the health of our community and will ensure that everyone continues to get the best possible care at a public hospital in Australia.

“This election there is a clear choice - more of the same underfunding of our local public hospitals, or we can get more Greens into Federal Parliament to make billionaires and big corporations pay their fair share of tax to fund the public healthcare our community needs, like well-resourced local public hospitals, dental into medicare, and seeing the GP for free.”

“Today the Greens are announcing an investment of $3b in WA’s public hospitals over the next ten years. This means an average of $34.4m for all 88 hospitals in WA, including Royal Perth Hospital.

“If you talk to anyone who has had to spend time in Royal Perth Hospital, they share how amazing the healthcare workforce is, but in the next breath, they share that they are concerned about how dilapidated Royal Perth Hospital has become.

“It’s not acceptable that Royal Perth Hospital has been neglected for decades by State and Federal Governments. Governments need to get on and invest in our inner city hospital. As more people present to the Royal Perth emergency department, our community expects a
greater level of investment and this is what the Greens have announced today.

“I’d like to see Royal Perth Hospital resourced to be one of the best hospitals in the world. Our inner-city hospital should be able to offer a great range of free health services and our health workforce should be given the best possible facilities that they need to do their job”

“In a wealthy place like Australia, we all deserve better. We deserve big corporations paying a bit more tax so we can get the things we need to live a good life. The Greens have a comprehensive public health platform, with the Greens plan for Perth being an investment in
prevention, bringing down the cost of seeing the GP, and directly investing in our local hospitals.
