Australian Greens are in Solidarity with the Kashmiri Community

2023-10-27

Australian Greens are in Solidarity with the Kashmiri Community on October 27 as they commemorate Black Day.

Today is Black Day for the Kashmiri Community. A day that marks the start of India’s illegal occupation of Kashmir. The Australian Greens support the calls and the campaign for self-determination by the people of Kashmir and the diaspora across the world.

Greens Senator David Shoebridge is hosting a commemoration event by AUSPAK Women’s Association in the Commonwealth Parliament at 11.30 am on 27 October 2023.

Quotes attributed to Senator Jordon Steele-John, Australian Greens Spokesperson For Foreign Affairs

“The Australian Greens are calling on the Indian Government to restore and respect the human rights of the people in Kashmir and Jammu, their right to self-determination and peace.”

“The Australian Government must do more. Particularly to ensure community members are safe and have and have access to healthcare, education, food, and clean water."

“All people have the unalienable right to self-determination. The Australian Greens acknowledge that the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir are currently facing a humanitarian and human rights crisis that requires urgent international attention."

Quotes attributed to New South Wales Senator David Shoebridge
"27 October commemorates the day on which Indian troops occupied independent Kashmir and Jammu and in 2023 marks 76 years of that occupation.

"This is a day to call for respect for human rights and to make a fresh call for a UN-monitored process that allows the people of Kashmir and Jammu to freely and fairly express their will on self-determination."
