The Senate has passed a motion from Tasmanian Greens Senator Nick McKim calling on the government to abandon plans to centralise the Bureau of Meteorology's forecasting services.
“The moves to centralise forecasting at the bureau will undermine an essential service that Tasmanians rely on, and potentially cost lives,” Senator McKim said.
“As our climate changes, we need the local experience and expertise in Tasmanian conditions even more than before.”
“From firefighters to farmers, all Tasmanians need accurate, local and timely forecasts and advice from the Bureau.”
“It is deeply disappointing that the Tasmanian Liberals and Steve Martin have refused to stand up for our state.”
“I thank my Greens, Labor and crossbench colleagues for supporting this motion.”
