Coca-Cola Amatil closure another blow for local factory workers

2017-02-22

The Australian Greens extend their condolences to the staff and their families affected by today’s announcement that the Thebarton Coca-Cola Amatil factory will close in 2019.

“This is another blow to our state, and our local factory workers and their families and I extend my condolences to those affected,” Greens Senator for South Australia Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“It is disappointing that the decision by Coca-Cola Amatil to close its iconic Thebarton factory adds to a line of companies that despite long-time community goodwill have decided to turn their back on South Australia.

“The Greens will continue to fight for immediate action on addressing the hit to employment in manufacturing industries to make sure that in two years’ time when 180 staff walk off the bottling plant for the last time, they will have solid employment prospects to walk into.

"This week we heard that a number of companies are planning on establishing battery and energy storage plants in SA. The flow on affect for local jobs will be significant from these projects if the state and federal governments are able to get behind them.

"It's time for our politicians to put their political bickering aside and work together to create new and sustainable jobs in SA.”
