WA Greens Senator Rachel Siewert and Alison Xamon MLC welcome the Victorian and NSW Governments agreeing to sign up to a national redress scheme for survivors of child sexual abuse, but urge the Commonwealth to work closely with the McGowan Government to ensure that the scheme is rolled out in WA.
Australian Greens Senator Rachel Siewert said today:
“It is great to see progress with Eastern states signing up to the national redress scheme - this means survivors will finally begin to receive the redress they have waited so long for.
“It is disappointing that there is still no agreement on a ‘funder of last resort’, it is critically important that this gets resolved so that survivors don’t fall through the cracks because those responsible are not around to pay compensation or simply can’t.
WA Greens MLC Hon Alison Xamon said:
“I understand that the Commonwealth is yet to answer legitimate questions raised by the WA State Government regarding the scheme, and this has stalled negotiations. The Commonwealth must resolve these queries as a matter of urgency so that the scheme can be rolled out as soon as possible here in WA.
“WA survivors should as soon as possible be able to receive the proper redress they deserve. I also urge the Commonwealth and State Government to quickly reach an agreement on the ‘funder of last resort’.”
