Corporate tax cut defeat is a win for communities

The Australian Greens have welcomed the defeat of the Liberal Government’s corporate tax cuts Bill in the Senate today.

“South Australians can breathe a sigh of relief that their schools and hospitals won’t take another hit after the Liberal Government’s tax cuts were knocked back today,” Greens finance spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“Tax revenue plays an integral part in ensuring South Australia’s schools, hospitals and other essential services are adequately funded.

“South Australia’s essential services took a $553 million hit when the Government’s tax cuts to the rich – including politicians – passed the senate in June. We simply can’t afford any more cuts to essential services.

“The Government needs to get its priorities in order. South Australians want to know that when there is an emergency, there is a doctor at a hospital available to help. They want to know their children are getting access to good quality public education. They want an increase to NewStart and support for our renewable energy industry.

“The Greens have stood firm against the Liberal Government’s tax cuts for the rich, big corporations and the big banks, and we will continue to fight for a fairer economy that puts our communities ahead of corporate interests.”
