CSIRO needs to sever ties with Minerals Council: Bandt

The CSIRO must immediately cancel its paid membership of the Minerals Council, Australian Greens science and research spokesperson, Adam Bandt, said today. CSIRO should not be a member of a climate denying lobbyist group, Mr Bandt said.

The FOI requests made by the Australia Institute and released today show that the CSIRO pays at least $10,000 in Associate Membership fees to the Minerals Council of Australia.

Quotes attributable to Mr Bandt:

"The CSIRO is Australia's pre-eminent independent science institution yet we now know it is a card-carrying member of an extreme anti-science organisation that actively opposes action on climate change."

"It is shocking that while the world watches the most powerful Atlantic hurricane on record bear down on the United States, our leading climate science body is giving membership fees to climate change denying coal lobbyists."

"CEO Larry Marshall lost a lot of credibility when he slashed climate science jobs at CSIRO and this latest fiasco won't do him any good."

"CSIRO needs to cancel its membership with the Minerals Council immediately."
