Faruqi moves to undo cuts to northern summer live exports ban

2022-09-06

Senator Mehreen Faruqi, Australian Greens Deputy Leader and Spokesperson for Animal Welfare, will this evening move to reverse the weakening of the ban on live sheep export to the Middle East during the Northern Summer by disallowing the Export Control (Animals) Amendment (Northern Hemisphere Summer Prohibition) Rules 2022

Senator Faruqi said:

“Disallowing the cruel Morrison-era decision to endanger thousands of sheep by allowing them to be exported into the cruel heat of the Northern summer is the least the Senate can do on the path to ending live exports once and for all.

“Sheep routinely die horrific deaths or suffer immense heat stress on live export ships. No animal deserves to be shipped off to die at sea at the hottest times of the year. This trade in misery has gone on for far too long.

“Labor should do the right thing and support this disallowance and then commit to a rapid end to all live exports.”
