Federal Government must show leadership, step up and commit funding to develop mRNA manufacturing capacity

2021-04-21

“It’s time for the Morrison Government to step up and show leadership on developing publicly-owned mRNA manufacturing capacity", Greens spokesperson on Health Senator Rachel Siewert said.

“It’s not good enough to say they are doing investigations and scoping studies. How much longer do we have to wait?

“Victoria has committed to investing $50m to manufacturing mRNA, the Federal Government should work with Victoria and other states to ensure we have Australian manufacturing capacity as soon as possible.

“Having the domestic capacity to manufacture mRNA vaccines and drugs in Australia will be a game changer. It would allow us to produce a diverse and effective range of vaccines onshore and act as a vaccine hub for our neighbours.

“The vaccine roll out is a shambles. If the government had listened to the expert advice and set up a publicly-owned vaccine maker when the Greens first called for it almost a year ago, it could be up and running by now and we would not be in this mess.”
