Fossil fuel giant BHP turns away from coal, Turnbull needs to stop and smell the carbon

The Turnbull government’s attempts to deny the death of coal is unlikely to survive another year, as the world’s largest mining company, BHP Billiton, is set to abandon the climate-denying lobbyists in the World Coal Association.

It’s a damning reflection of how broken our political system is that even fossil fuel industry giants are rapidly turning away from coal, yet our politicians continue to invest in and defend it.

The only reason the Turnbull government is propping up the dying coal industry is because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in political donations they pocket from coal companies.

Resources Minister Matt Canavan and the Turnbull Goverment need to stop and smell the carbon instead of feeding us the lie that coal is a clean and profitable industry while key corporations and investors are bailing out.

The Turnbull Government is costing us jobs and future opportunity because they care more about lining the pockets of their mining industry mates than creating the economy of the 21st century.
