Government prioritises big business handouts over university funding

The Greens stand with students around the country protesting against the Government’s cruel $2.2 billion worth of university cuts, as the Government prepares to push through $65 billion of tax cuts to big business through the Senate today.

“The Government’s $65 billion worth of tax cuts to big businesses are being brought to the Senate today, while the Government takes an axe to university funding,” Greens higher education spokesperson Senator Sarah Hanson-Young said.

“This Government is preventing young people from low-income families from improving their lot in life and furthering their education. Capping places and upping university fees will do nothing but price people out of an education and the Greens stand with students rallying today against this attack.

“This is a government that has its priorities all wrong. If we can afford to give massive handouts to corporations but we can’t afford to provide for young people to get ahead, then we have something seriously wrong going on. Making it harder for students in a world where we need young people prepared as best they can be for the jobs of tomorrow is a backwards move from an out-of-touch government.

“Cost of living is crippling young people who struggle to balance work, study, bills, rent and putting food on the table. The Government must wake up and end the attack on these young people, who simply want to get ahead in life.”
