Greens Announce Future of Work Commission

2022-05-13

Media release

Greens Leader Adam Bandt has joined Greens candidate for Macnamara Steph Hodgins-May to announce a new election policy establishing a Future of Work Commission.

Mr Bandt will outline the plan for the Commission in an address to a Future Jobs community forum at the South Melbourne Lifesaving Club tonight.

The Future of Work Commission will examine positive and negative trends in the evolution of work and report to government, business and unions on how to maximise the opportunities.

The issues the Commission would cover include the impact of digitalisation and automation, the rise of remote working and the challenges of secure work and underemployment. The prospects for moving to a standard 4 day working week will also be reviewed.

Quotes attributable to Greens Leader Adam Bandt MP:

“Work is alway changing and the pandemic has highlighted some of the challenges and opportunities.”

“The gig economy is migrating through the whole economy. Remote working, digitalisation and automation are all changing the way we work, but people don’t have enough control to make it work for them.”

“The low unemployment rate is masking a lot of underemployment and insecurity. The Future of Work Commission would look at what it would mean to move to a standard 4 day working week with no loss of pay, which is one way to spread available work more fairly across society and ensure a better life for everyone.”

“We need to be talking about the jobs of the future too. Clean energy, green industries, new services. We should be aiming for 2% unemployment and a Future of Work Commission can help chart the path.”
