Greens call Albanese a classic ‘type 2 climate denier’

2024-08-27

The Australian Greens have urged Labor to immediately stop backing new coal and gas, following a similar call from the UN Secretary-General overnight.

During the opening day of the Pacific Islands Forum in Tonga yesterday, Antonio Guterres called on Australia and other developed nations to immediately ban the expansion of fossil fuel industries to save the world from an “escalating climate crisis”.

Yet despite the science making clear that strong climate action means no new coal and gas, Labor has approved 23 coal and gas projects, with more in the pipeline.

Quotes attributable to Leader of the Australian Greens, Adam Bandt MP:

“The Prime Minister is a classic type two climate denier.

“Type one is when you deny the science, and type two is when you deny what the science tells you to do.

“Peter Dutton denies what the science says, while Anthony Albanese denies what the science says to do.

“Scientists agree there can be no new coal or gas projects if we’re to avoid climate collapse, yet since coming into power Labor has approved 23 new coal and gas projects to run as late as 2080.

“You can’t put the fire out if you’re pouring petrol on it.”
