Greens call on ALP to back family and domestic violence bill
Greens spokesperson for employment Adam Bandt MP today welcomed Labor’s announcement to match Greens policy to legislate for 10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave, but said instead of waiting till the next election, Bill Shorten should get behind the Greens’ bill and pass the bill the next time Parliament sits.
The Greens recently released a bill to legislate 10 days’ paid family and domestic violence leave and were due to introduce it in this session of Parliament, until Malcolm Turnbull altered sitting times.
“I welcome Labor’s announcement to match Greens policy, but there’s no need to wait until the next election,” said Mr Bandt.
“10 days of paid family and domestic violence leave for all workers is long overdue and we can legislate it in this Parliament.
“With the government regularly changing policies under public pressure and losing votes in the House, there’s every chance we could pass this law the next time Parliament sits.
“If Labor backs the Greens’ bill and helps us legislate this overdue reform, we will help save lives.”
