Greens concern at Iran’s crackdown on dissent

Senator Richard Di Natale, leader of the Australian Greens and Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs, said the Australian Greens remain deeply concerned at the recent crackdown on dissent in Iran, with official reports of at least 22 protesters killed and more than 1,000 Iranians detained.

“As a State Party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, Iran must uphold its citizens rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression”, Senator Di Natale said.

“The Australian Greens call on the Iranian authorities to immediately release anyone detained for peacefully protesting, or supporting peaceful protests.  Iran must also protect protestors and detainees from torture and ill-treatment.  The Greens urge the Iranian authorities to investigate reports that security forces unlawfully used force against unarmed protestors.”

“The Australian Greens will continue to closely monitor the political and human rights situation in Iran.”
