The Greens will today force another vote in the Senate on a minimum 25 per cent gas export tax, as Australian gas companies continue to report billions in revenues and profits amid war-driven global gas prices.
While Australians struggle with the cost of living, the gas giants are cashing in: Woodside’s quarterly revenue surged 28 per cent to AUD$6 bn, Santos’ rose 6 per cent to A$1.35 billion, and Shell reported AUD$13.9 bn in quarterly profit, its strongest since 2022.
The debate and vote is expected to take place today, 12 August, from around 4.15pm
Quotes attributable to Australian Greens spokesperson for Resources, Senator Steph Hodgins-May:
“Labor has a simple choice. Vote with the Australian people for a gas tax, or vote with their gas corporation donors against it.
“Seven in ten Australians support a gas export tax. Labor has made a platform commitment to a fairer return from our resources, and now, gas corporations are raking in billions in war-driven windfall profits. What exactly are they waiting for?
“Stop overcomplicating it and let’s bloody get it done.”
