Greens to introduce gambling ad ban bill in Senate as PM backtracks to bookies

2024-09-19

The Greens will move to ban gambling ads across the board and have given notice of their Bill to ban gambling advertising in line with the Peta Murphy Inquiry recommendations in the Senate today. Senator Hanson-Young has slammed the Prime Minister’s further backtracking and failure to stand up to the gambling lobby on ABC radio this morning as “weak and wrong”.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young gave notice of the Greens’ Bill to ban gambling ads at approximately 11:15 am today in the Senate.

Senator Sarah Hanson-Young is Greens Spokesperson for Communications:

“The Prime Minister’s comments today are weak and they are wrong.

“More backtracking and more buckling to the bookies show the Prime Minister doesn't have the guts to stand up to the gambling lobby - but the Greens will act.

“Today I gave notice of the Greens Ban Gambling Ads Bill in the Senate. This Bill will ban gambling ads on TV, radio and online in line with Peta Murphy’s legacy and the multi-party  committee recommendations.

“Peta Murphy, the experts and the evidence are clear: gambling ads do significant harm and they must be banned, just like tobacco ads.

“If, as the PM said, banning gambling ads is the ‘easy option’ to reduce gambling harm, he should get on with it and back the Greens’ Bill.

“Every family watching the footy or rugby finals this September will have to cop the ads being rammed down our throats as a result of the Prime Minister's failure.

“The Parliament could make this law before the end of the year if the PM had the guts.”
