The Australian Greens met today with intersex community representatives at Parliament House as part of recognition of celebrations for Intersex Awareness Day next Friday 26 October.
“My Greens colleagues and I were pleased to meet with members of our intersex community to hear their lived experiences and discuss the urgent actions needed to protect the human rights of people born with variations in sex characteristics” said Senator Janet Rice, Australian Greens LGBTIQ+ spokesperson.
“The Greens are committed to supporting and advocating for the intersex community in parliament.
“Last year we celebrated Intersex Awareness Day at Parliament House for the very first time. It’s crucial that Australian leaders listen to and take note of our intersex community, and affirm and implement the Darlington Statement, a joint consensus statement by Australian and Aotearoa/New Zealand intersex organisations.
In a joint statement, the intersex representatives said: “We’re very grateful for the chance to meet with Greens parliamentarians and staff ahead of intersex awareness day, and for the chance to outline our call for legal protections from unnecessary medical interventions, together with effective oversight, standards of care, and resourcing for peer support and systemic advocacy.”
Senator Rice is Co-chair of also a member of the Parliamentary Friends of LGBTIQ Australians, the cross-party group that hosted this year’s advocacy event.
