Greens to refer offshore wind farm bill to inquiry for scrutiny

2021-09-02

The Greens have welcomed the introduction of the Offshore Electricity Infrastructure Bill 2021 and Offshore Electricity Infrastructure (Regulatory Levies) Bill 2021 as the beginning of Australia’s offshore wind industry.

However, given Angus Taylor’s hostility to climate action, and to ensure high standards of environmental and industrial protections are maintained, the Greens will refer the legislation to the the Environment and Communications Committee (with Sarah Hanson Young is Deputy Chair) to report by 14 October.

Quotes attributable to Greens leader Adam Bandt MP:

“Executed correctly, this is another arrow in the quiver of getting to 700% renewables and exporting clean energy to the world.

“To cut ties with coal for good, we need good union jobs in the renewable energy sector.

"This legislation could help bring good union jobs to places like the Latrobe Valley and broader Gippsland, like the upcoming Star of the South project will do.

“However, Angus Taylor has repeatedly tried to sabotage clean energy development, so we’re referring it to a committee to scrutinise the legislation and hear from the industry.”
