Greens sharpen focus on racism in sport

2023-05-13

The Australian Greens have announced WA Senator Dorinda Cox as the party spokesperson for Sport.

Racism and corporate sponsorship by fossil fuel companies will be her key focus areas as the portfolio holder.

Comments attributable to WA Greens Senator, and Yamatji Noongar woman, Dorinda Cox:

With great pride I have been asked by Greens Party Leader, Adam Bandt, to hold the portfolio of Sport on behalf of the Australian Greens.

“Sport has played such a big part of my life, especially in my younger years when I tried my hand at anything and everything -  softball, tennis, badminton, cricket, netball, basketball. I also enjoyed little athletics with my favourite events being long jump, triple jump, discus and javelin.

“Community sport is the fabric of our nation, and as a basketball mum most Saturdays, I know we need federal and state government investment to secure community sport and participation.

“Right now, our news headlines are capturing a snapshot of the racist vilification happening in sport, both at professional and community levels. I support athletes, coaches and sporting organisations taking a stand to stamp out racism to ensure the cultural safety of all players and fans.

“And the ethical debate about corporate sponsorship in sport is justifiably gaining momentum too.

“I look forward to leading conversations that ensure equitable access to sport at all levels is possible now and for future generations.”
